The market is booming partly because cannabis can be quite a versatile kind of medication. Several scientific studies have discovered that cannabis has got the possibility to assist with a number of medical conditions, including anxiety, chronic pain, and epilepsy.
But, just like any recreational or medical marijuana user can tell you, not all cannabis is created equal. Different strains of cannabis produce different effects, and thus can be used as different reasons.
If marijuana is legal where you live and you’re trying to give it a try, but not sure which strains best meet your requirements, we’ve got you covered. Take a look at our help guide to marijuana strains below.
What exactly is a marijuana strain? If you’ve read a little about marijuana, or if you enter most dispensaries, you could view the words indica, sativa, and hybrid. Generally, many people divide marijuana in to these three categories.
Indica, which comes from the Hindu Kush mountains of India, is believed to possess a relaxing influence on an individual. Sativa has a more energizing effect, while hybrid is a combination of both.
Many skilled professionals, however, are reconsidering the indica, sativa and hybrid categories. In accordance with Amos Elberg, head of data science at Confident Cannabis, these terms are pretty much meaningless.
“We see samples of all cannabis products tested through our partner labs, and when we examine all of the data, particularly from the chemical makeup of flower, we see no identifiable characteristics that are consistent with indica, sativa, or hybrid,” he explains.
“Essentially folks are utilizing these terms as catchalls for effect, but they’re not all consistent with those effects. Some indica makes many people wired, not couch-locked, for example.”
Quite simply, people shouldn’t be alarmed when a reportedly energizing sativa strain has even more of a mellowing effect, or maybe an indica strain ensures they are feel more bubbly and excitable.
Beyond indica, sativa, and hybrid, dispensaries might divide the types of cannabis they have into strains. Strains are essentially different breeds of cannabis, and they’re bred to get specific effects in the user.
However, if the terms indica, sativa, and hybrid are essentially useless categorizations, are strain names also meaningless?
Not exactly, says Elberg. “Not all seeds which can be sold beneath the same name are genetically identical, as well as necessarily related. Some producers may choose to develop a strain name essentially as a branding exercise, or identify their product having an existing name simply because they believe the product matches characteristics the market expects from product sold under that name,” Elberg explains. There are, however, still consistencies among product sold under specific strain names, Elberg adds.
“In general, for that less frequent names, product sold by different vendors is usually pretty consistent,” he notes. “For the most frequent strain names, however, a wider number of different items are sold.”
If you purchase product from a quality source, the strains needs to be pretty much consistent. Keep in mind, however, that each and every person reacts differently to cannabis.
